New additions to the Economics team Reply

With classes starting this week we are proud to officially welcome two new additions to the staff in the School of Economics – the husband and wife team: Derick and Anmar. Mrs Anmar Pretorius joined us at the end of last year and Prof Derick Blaauw was appointed from the first of January 2014. They are both experienced lecturers and researchers and we are keen to draw on their experience and expertise.

Prof Derick Blaauw

Derick Blaauw is an associate professor in the School of Economics. Prior to taking up this position, he lectured in the Department of Economics and Econometrics at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and at the Soweto and Bloemfontein Campuses of Vista University.Among Professor Blaauw’s research interests are labour and development economics, and the science behind economic well-being.  His current work focuses on the socio-economic dynamics of vulnerable groups in the informal economy, such as car guards, day labourers and waste pickers. Other areas of research include the potential economic impact of green energy projects in the Northern Cape and the role of labour brokers in South Africa’s labour market. Professor Blaauw has a list of publications to his credit, having authored and co-authored numerous articles in accredited national and international journals, as well as conference papers, working papers and research papers intended for local and international audiences.

Mrs Anmar Pretorius

Anmar Pretorius is a lecturer in the School of Economics at the Potchefstroom campus of the North-West University. She currently teaches Economics, Econometrics and is also coordinating the honours research essays. Anmar has published both in local and international journals and has presented various papers at local and international conferences. Her research interests include: financial economics, applied econometrics, local economic development, and green energy. Her soon to be submitted doctoral study investigates South Africa’s financial market integration with the rest of the world. She has also acted as reviewer and discussant of papers for an international conference focusing on international finance as well as reviewer for local and international journals.
